With the constant and rapidly changing technological world,
how is anyone supposed to keep up? Is it possible to avoid being an index
finger texting, flip phone using parent in my children’s generation? Or will I eventually
fall behind and out of touch with reality? It’s mind blowing to imagine all of
the advances technology is capable of making in just a few, brief years (or
days). New apps, smart phones, transportation methods, gaming systems,
communication and medical advances, the possibilities are endless. In the “Art of Social Media,” Guy Kawasaki
and Peg Fitzpatrick explain a couple ways to stay current with technology and
appropriate on social media.
When it comes to emerging technology, the best place to
start is right where you are. Unless you were born under a rock, we all
have Internet access at home. This is all you need to read and research about
new inventions and advances in technology. Websites like Engadget.com or even
the Wall Street Journal provide descriptions of new consumer tech. Also, be
willing to try new technologies for yourself. No one wants to spend money on a
gadget they don’t like, so be sure to talk to friends and read consumer reviews online for
feedback. As you’re exploring new platforms you’re likely
to come across posts you don’t agree with, but the Internet does not revolve
around you. It’s always best not to act like a guru if you aren’t one,
especially on social media. It’s a never-ending learning process that we’re all
trying to catch up with.
Kawasaki and Fitzpatrick point out, “No matter how smart you
are, best practices always change… Therefore, everyone needs to keep
experimenting.”
I feel like us, as college students are trying so hard to stay up to date on the new technology. I feel like just becoming a hermit and never having to deal with technology sometimes because I'm always behind on it.
