I Guess Facebook is all right...
I don’t like Facebook, that’s my blunt opinion. In middle
school I was all about taking hundreds of
pictures, editing them and sharing them all over my timeline. I created a new
album for every occasion in my life, it was obnoxious. However, as I got
older and new social media platforms emerged, I quickly abandoned Facebook for
the simpler photo sharing apps. Being a Public Relations major and Social Media
minor, I realize that I will eventually have to make amends with my neglected
Facebook page. In the “Social Media Marketing Workbook” author Jason McDonald
provides a few good reasons why.
McDonald’s first argument supporting Facebook as the best
platform for social media marketing is the outreach. Facebook is, by far,
the largest platform with over one billion users. Just about every person you
meet, regardless of geographic background, has an account. Not to mention
countless companies and organizations. Next, McDonald says, “Once
you understand the dynamics of Facebook, you’ll more easily understand the
dynamics of other social media.” In other words, Facebook is the "gateway
drug" of social media. Lastly, he talks about Edgerank, which is a system that
rewards users for posting content that other users interact with. Whether
you’re using Facebook personally or for a company, it’s important to know and
understand your followers and public’s interests.
So download the app, log yourself in and dust off the cobwebs. Facebook is important.
