Turn Down the Twitter Noise
Twitter is loud. It’s like all of
your radio stations blaring through your car speakers at once in an obnoxious mesh
of sound. People are free to tweet as frequently as they want and about
whatever they want, with no knowledge or authentication required. It’s an
endless stream of news, opinions, gossip, pointless comments and funny gifs.
The possibilities for Twitter content are endless, which can sometimes make the
Twitter noise unbearable.
In the “Social Media Marketing
Workbook” author Jason McDonald talks about the culture and noise of Twitter.
He explains that Twitter is a fast-paced, blizzard of information. Tweets are
short and to the point, which allows for quick, informational and often times
opinionated posts. If you’re tweeting
for a company Twitter can be one of your greatest assets. However, it’s
important to understand which content is useful and which content is
meaningless noise. The same applies for your personal Twitter accounts. You’re
not going to agree or care about everything you scroll past, so do yourself a favor and turn down the noise. Follow more accounts that post valid, helpful content you enjoy and get rid of nagging accounts that serve you no benefit. You wouldn't listen to a radio station that plays country music when you only like pop music. So why do you still follow Twitter accounts that post content you don't appreciate? When you learn how to tune out the excess noise, Twitter can evolve from a
waste of time to a helpful asset.
This is great advice! Twitter can sometimes be a little too much for me, for those reasons exactly. Half of tweets I see seem to be completely pointless, which makes me wonder why I'm even on Twitter in the first place. Great post!
